Spring Awakening: Your Ultimate RV De-Winterization Checklist

Published on Mar 11, 2025 by Matthew Kroll

Ah, spring! The birds are chirping, the sun is shining, and the open road is calling. For RV enthusiasts, this means one glorious thing: it's time to dust off those rigs and prepare for a season of adventure. But before you hit the highway, you've got a crucial task: de-winterizing your RV.

After months of hibernation, your home-on-wheels needs a thorough check-up to ensure everything is in tip-top shape. Don't worry, we've got you covered with this ultimate RV de-winterization checklist. Let's get started!

1. Exterior Inspection: The First Look

  • Wash and Wax: Start by giving your RV a good wash. Remove any winter grime, road salt, and accumulated dirt. A fresh wax will protect the finish and give it that gleaming look.
  • Inspect the Roof: Check for any cracks, tears, or damage to the sealant. Pay close attention to seams and around vents and skylights.
  • Tire Check: Inspect your tires for cracks, bulges, and proper inflation. Don't forget to check the spare!
  • Sealants and Caulking: Examine all exterior seals and caulking around windows, doors, and compartments. Replace any that are cracked or damaged.
  • Lights and Signals: Test all exterior lights, including headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals.

2. Plumbing System: The Heart of Your RV

  • Drain Antifreeze: If you used RV antifreeze, drain it from the fresh water tank, water heater, and all plumbing lines.
  • Flush the System: Fill the fresh water tank with clean water and run all faucets and showers until the water runs clear. This will flush out any remaining antifreeze.
  • Sanitize the System: Use a sanitizing solution to disinfect your fresh water tank and plumbing lines. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the correct ratio of bleach to water.
  • Check for Leaks: Inspect all plumbing connections for leaks. Turn on the water pump and check under sinks, around the toilet, and in the shower.
  • Water Heater: Bypass the water heater if you haven't already. Turn it on and check for proper operation.

3. Electrical System: Powering Your Adventures

  • Battery Check: Clean battery terminals and check the water level (if applicable). Charge the battery fully.
  • Shore Power: Plug into shore power and test all electrical outlets and appliances.
  • Generator: If your RV has a generator, start it up and let it run for a while to ensure it's functioning properly.
  • Fuses and Breakers: Check all fuses and breakers to make sure they are in good condition.

4. Appliances and Systems: Creature Comforts

  • Refrigerator: Clean the refrigerator and freezer. Turn it on and check for proper cooling.
  • Stove and Oven: Clean the stove and oven. Test all burners and the oven to ensure they are working correctly.
  • Air Conditioner/Heater: Clean or replace air filters. Test the air conditioner and heater to make sure they are functioning properly.
  • LP Gas System: Check the LP gas tank level. Test all LP gas appliances, including the stove, oven, and water heater. Check for leaks using a soapy water solution.
  • Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries as needed.

5. Interior Check: Home Sweet Home

  • Clean and Organize: Give the interior a thorough cleaning. Vacuum, dust, and wipe down all surfaces.
  • Check for Pests: Inspect for any signs of pests, such as rodents or insects.
  • Curtains and Blinds: Check for any damage to curtains or blinds.
  • Storage Compartments: Organize and restock your storage compartments with essential supplies.

6. Hit the Road

  • Test Drive: Take your RV for a short test drive to ensure everything is working properly.
  • Emergency Kit: Ensure your emergency kit is fully stocked with first-aid supplies, a flashlight, and other essentials.
  • Documentation: Check that your registration, insurance, and driver's license are up to date.

De-winterizing your RV might seem like a daunting task, but by following this checklist, you'll be well on your way to a season of unforgettable adventures. Remember to take your time, be thorough, and enjoy the process of preparing your RV for the open road. Happy travels!
